Celebrating Sweetest Day 2021

10.07.2021

Happy Sweetest Day! We are so excited for everything we have planned to celebrate this wonderful holiday!

What is Sweetest Day?

In 1921, a Cleveland candy maker named Herbert Birch Kingston decided to try to share a bit of kindness with those less fortunate. He distributed candy to people experiencing homelessness and orphaned children, and inspired Cleveland with his gesture. The next year, 12 of Cleveland’s candy companies joined together for the first official Sweetest Day, distributing over 20,000 boxes of candy to“newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor.”

In the 1930s, movie stars helped to make this holiday famous in the Midwest. Ann Pennigton handed out candy to more than 2,000 Cleveland Newspaper boys, and Theda Bara distributed candy to patients of the Cleveland hospitals.

Today, Sweetest Day still inspires kindness and caring every third Saturday in October. It isn’t meant to be another Valentine’s Day; on the contrary, Sweetest Day is about generosity and random acts of kindness without any romantic intentions. Sweetest Day is traditionally celebrated by giving candy and other sweets to friends, family, and those less fortunate or in need of a smile.

How are we celebrating this year?

We are so excited to be partnering with The Cincinnati Children's Home to deliver kind words to Cincinnati youth! Starting Wednesday, October 13th you will be able to find Sweetest Day postcards at participating partners; fill out a postcard with a kind or encouraging message, and the following Monday we will deliver all these postcards along with candy to The Cincinnati Children's Home! Find Postcards at King Arthur's Toys, Astute Furnishings, Threads Boutique, The Spotted Goose, and Deeper Roots in Oakley and at The Spicy Olive, and the Pilates Center of Cincinnati in Montgomery (along with both Aglamesis Brother's locations, of course!).

We will also be donating 5% of all candy sales from 10/11 - 10/17 to Lighthouse Youth and Family Services!

We are thrilled to announce we'll also be hosting a flower pop-up at both of our locations on Sweetest Day, featuring flowers from another Cincinnati small business, Wildwood Flora! We will have roses and bouquets available while supplies last, so you can get sweets and gorgeous flowers for your friends, family, partner, co-workers, or anyone who you want to give a bit of kindness to!

We can't wait to see you all this week!

Happy Sweetest Day!
